In July 2004, the Government launched the ‘local vision’ debate, to discuss the devolution of the power of central government to local authorities.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has now published the Local Government White Paper 2006 highlighting the importance of a strong relationship between local government and the Voluntary & Community (third) sector.

There are a few ideas behind the paper: to devolve some of central government’s power to local authorities; to give a bigger voice and a larger role to individual citizens and the communities to which they belong, to enable them to shape the public services which they receive and have an active role in improving their lives. It is proposed that local authorities will create stronger partnerships with those in their area and as a consequence can work to ‘better meet the public’s needs’ (Tony Blair).

So the creation of ‘strong, prosperous communities’ (Ruth Kelly MP) is the goal and this new White Paper is the key to improving local services for local people like you and me!
